Keep Alfie alive.
A well-watered tree typically lasts 4 to 6 weeks. Here's how to get every last day.

Water it every single day
A fresh tree can drink a quart or more a day, especially in week one. Keep the water above the cut. If the stand runs dry, sap can seal the trunk and it stops drinking.

Give it 24 hours
Branches need time to warm up and settle after being netted. Your tree will look fuller by tomorrow.

Watch for dry needles
Run a hand along a branch. If needles fall off in clumps or snap when bent, the tree is drying out. Time to call the Clean Sweep.

Skip the old wives' tales
Plain tap water does the job. Aspirin, soda and bleach don't help, and some additives can make things worse.
Fire safety, for real
- Keep it at least 3 feet from fireplaces, radiators, candles and vents.
- Use LED lights and check strands for damage.
- Turn lights off when you sleep or leave.
- Don't block exits, and take the tree down once it's dry.
